Agatha Christie A to Z: The Essential Reference to Her Life and Writings
Published in Hardcover by Checkmark Books (February, 1997)
Average review score:

An indispensable workMany books have been written concerning the life and writing of Agatha Christie, but, so far, this book must take the prize for being the most comprehensive, well-informed and accurate guide to the work of this remarkable author. This is not a critical appraisal of Christie's works, but rather the sort of book you need at hand when reading a Christie title. Dawn B. Sova has compiled an outstanding array of knowledge on Agatha Christie's books, with all sorts of information which should further any devoted reader's enjoyment of Mrs Christie's work. An excellent achievement.

Armenian Papers: Poems, 1954-1984 (Princeton Series of Contemporary Poets)
Published in Hardcover by Princeton Univ Pr (February, 2000)
Average review score:

One of the great poets of experimental formThis book is best described by "Trial Impressions," a 30-part poem which dominates the middle of the book. The first part of the poem reprints, verbatim, a short piece by the English poet John Dowland. The rest of the poems in the sequence rewrite this poem, each in a different way: as sestina, as Mallarmean sonnet, as contemporary plea ("Up to Date"), as an Oulipo "N+7" exercise (using two different dictionaries), as a detective riddle, as a palindrome, as Chinese imagism ("The Wang Way."), etc. The closest precedent to this amazing poem is Raymond Queneau's "Exercises in Style," another Oulipean tour de force. The poem is funny, touching, and maddening. There are other great works in the book, including the title piece (a very interesting faux "translation" of a nonexsistent prose precedent). And there is also "Histoire," perhaps the funniest sestina in the English language. This is a seduction narrative in which the repeated end-words are "Feminism," "Fascism," "Militarism," Marxism-Leninism," "Sexism," and "Racism." It's amazing to read this sestina and watch such words get drained of their meaning yet strangely re-energized.

Beyond Pearl Harbor: Civilians Imprisoned at Santo Tomas, Manila, 1942-1945

Best Personal Account of This Little Known EventClio Mathews Wetmore's balanced account of the little known fate of several thousand American, British, Australian, Canadian and other Allied civilians trapped in the Philippines in 1941 is the best of any account I have read. She draws us into camp, making the experience as real as if we were actually there. If I could own just one title about this experience, this book would be my choice. Clio Mathews was 28 when arrested by the Japanese military in Manila on 5 January 1941. She was placed in charge of a room of over 100 women prisoners, slept for 37 months on a hard table top crowded next to two other women, and did her best to maintain order in the crowded room. The story line describes vividly the weakness, fatigue, and memory loss that accompanied the final five months of virtual starvation from October 1944 to 3 February 1945 when the camp was finally liberated. It's good history and top-notch narrative.

These books are a great way to get familiar with the Bible!"The Bible's ABCs are the fastest, easiest way to get familiar with the Bible I've ever found, and the "Memory Tips" graphics in each book make it fun. I was able to cover a lot of material quickly in school using Cliff's Notes summaries, and this is the same principle. Outstanding!"

Current Directions in Computer Music Research
Published in CD-ROM by MIT Press (August, 1989)
Average review score:

A must have for computer music enthusiastsThe articles in collection are very readable - a great deal of care seems to have been made in the editing process. Various authors give summaries of different parts of the area of computer music. Some of the articles I particularly like include the following: i) several articles by different authors on synthesis of the singing voice; ii) the article by Mathews and Pierce on the Bohlen-Pierce scale, a non-octave-based scale of odd harmonics, with 3:5:7 and 5:7:9 chords; iii) Risset's article on paradoxical sounds; iv) Schottstaedt's article on automatic counterpoint. The subject is moving very rapidly, so some of the information is outdated, but most is not.
